Find similar free alternatives to paid Fonts

The animated GIF shows three different fonts which fit incredibly well together, in terms of their x-height. While Verdana does have an overall greater size, the x-height is similar to the other fonts. So vertical spacing of your email will be fine.

I have recently tried to steer clear of that mentality and try to experiment with different fonts and I'm pleasantly surprised at what's out there, we all know the popular fonts - the ones which we have heard about, but you probably haven't heard of their less famous, but strikingly similar font alternatives.

A font directory is a collection of fonts, usually on the internet where a user can go on, choose their font, and download. Some are paid, some are free... There is a bit of a dated preconception that paid font are better quality than free fonts, but over the years free font directories have taken a hold of the type industry and began to include some really decent, high quality fonts, for example:

Google fonts is made up of fully licensed fonts which are free for commercial use which comes under the SIL Open Font License, and is also free for Personal use. Making it an invaluable tool for designers world wide, and also a tool which helps to keep the budget down for clients.

As designers we know the importance of not only a quality font, but the cost of that font. If you can find a free font alternative to the paid font the client likes, you can save them a load of money on their budget which could be spent on other things like branding, illustrations, or marketing campaigns which the client may see far greater rewards from than to just pay hundreds (if not thousands) of pounds on a font.

Creating professional vector graphics doesn't have to be an expensive line item in your budget. If you're just starting out in the graphic design field or if you're an experienced designer looking for budget-friendly tools, one of these free alternatives is sure to work well for you.

@Typehuile So, is it illegal for any website to provide premium fonts for free? Because I know several websites that allow downloading of these two fonts that I mentioned. If I download these fonts without paying them, am I being unethical and, moreover, breaking the law?

What is the license they include? The site may license the font from the manufacturer under terms that allow them to offer it for free. Some manufacturers, such as URW, have properly licensed fonts that they offer for free.

I would say that the answer is no. They are allowed for certain purposes, not to use on products and only with a certain number of pageviews. Then, they are metered. You should try to find open font license or a freeware license that allows commercial use. I would stick with FontSquirrel or Google Fonts. Myfonts is difficult for buyers to use without overspending or doing a lot of research.

WhatFontIs has a lot of free & commercial fonts in their database, but it's not their primary concern to add & update free fonts, as their main income comes from affiliation sales of commercial fonts from MyFonts.com (the owner of WhatTheFont service), fonts.com and other commercial font resellers. More than this, it will not tell you that the free font they identified belong to Google Fonts.

b) The same thing applies to other free/fremium/commercial fonts sources as our online database contains the complete collection of Dafont.com, OPTI Fonts, etc. as well as more than 300 commercial foundries.

c) If you want to find a Google Web Font which is a good substitute of a commercial font, there is no reason to create any images: Find my Font has a special function to select a font of your computer, type the letters you want and find all similar fonts (including Google Fonts).

d) If you want to focus your results only on Google Fonts, you can download the whole Google Fonts set on your computer, let Find my Font know where these fonts are, and find an equivalent / similar font within seconds (the local font identification speed is about 5 million fonts / minute).

if you have only images (font's JPGs etc) then first you will need to know the name of that font. And there are 50+% chances to find the font names using these links. And afterwards, similar-fonts-to-those-found-names will be an easy way to Google.!
